6060 vs 6063 vs 6082: Which Aluminium Alloy Should You Choose?

Published 20 Temmuz 2026 · BYC Aluminium Engineering Team

Choosing the right aluminium alloy is the first decision in any profile order. The three most common extrusion alloys - 6060, 6063 and 6082 - look identical but behave differently in strength, surface finish and machinability.

When to Choose 6060

6060 is the workhorse for general purpose profiles: frames, covers, furniture and interior applications where extreme strength is not required. It extrudes easily, which keeps wholesale prices low, and welds without issues.

When to Choose 6063

6063 is the architectural alloy. Its fine grain structure produces the best surface after anodizing or powder coating - windows, doors, facades, handrails and any visible application. Strength is moderately higher than 6060.

When to Choose 6082

6082 is the strongest of the three and the standard choice for structural and load-bearing applications: machine frames, transport, scaffolding, bridges and marine environments. It machines very well but the surface finish after anodizing is duller than 6063.
